Naughtsha is a country found near the center of Icarus in the coldest regions of the world spanning over 19 islands. After a recent major political meltdown, the county is in a state of unrest.
ClimateThe climate varies across the islands of Naughtsha, but one thing they all hold in common is their freezing temperatures. The center islands can be extremely cold in the 5 month long winter, almost unbearable for most people from other islands.
The Revolution3 years ago, a change began to take place. Between the writings of Niex, the relatively recent explosion in magical knowledge and the stagnation in Naughtsha's political landscape, something had to fall. A small group of people began to surface to spread the ideals of Niex. While it was initially ignored, the movement began to gain strength and made Notcholas II worried. He began to try to stamp out the revolution, but this spread the flames of change more as people began to feel resentment. It's still debatable what the main cause of the complete fall was, but most people agree a combination of these factors gave the Bolshevik Party the edge they needed to overthrow the last notzar, Notcholas II. During the revolt, the entire notzar's family was killed as well as many of the nobility that did not submit to the cause.
While many blame the political climate and the system itself, the greatest tilting point in the revolution was a mysterious woman named Notsputin. She had become the advisor to Notcholas seemingly over night and was rumored to be able to conjure devils, see into the future and seamed to have a hold on the royal family. The unrest caused by her appearance created paranoia and even resulted in the woman being shot, burned and thrown in a river. This factor has been widely ignored by the rest of the world in favor of the shock of the death of the notzar and the rise of the communist party.
This has sparked several of the old revolutionists that fled Naughtsha during the initial uprising to desire to return home and has sparked some to leave Naughtsha in disgust of what has happened.
GovernmentIn the old system of government in Naughtsha, the Notzar and his family was given absolute control over the people. There was little to no movement among ranks, bringing a huge gap between the have and have nots.
The brand new government is a Communist government. The state has taken over all business enterprises and education channels. Going against these new changes tends to result in death of the offenders.
MagicIn the times long past, magic was view with suspicion, though was accepted an an extremely helpful thing to have around for a country lacking in resources. Pyromancers were especially well liked for their ability to bring warmth in the coldest of winters. While most dark magics were considered sinister, they were viewed with some interest by the curious and the desperate.
After the revolution, a new law has been set down on magic. All who use magic must either submit themselves to the state or be executed. Not submitting oneself can attract state mage hunters. A mage hunter will typically bring a magic user in front of a communist council member to be judged. However, the hunters are given permission to kill a magic user on sight if they are deemed too dangerous to bring in.
TraditionsLike many islands and nations, Naughtsha has several traditions it calls it's own. In giving gifts, one should never give a sharp object and should instead give money to the person to buy the object themselves. Similarly, giving an animal requires a very small sum of money from the receiver to make it a trade and not a gift. Giving a purse requires the giver to put in a small sum of money to ward off bad luck to the person receiving the gift.
When you are drinking alcohol, you have to drink your glass until it's gone, putting a glass with alcohol in it back on the table after you've started drinking is bad luck. Filling a glass while it's not in a surface is also taboo. Typically, alcohol is poured to everyone at the table but not everyone has to drink it.
